How to Choose a Good Protein Bar

Have you ever been to the grocery store and seen an aisle full of protein bars? It can be pretty overwhelming. All you wanted to do was grab a few protein bar s for a quick healthy snack and now you are faced with an endless wall of choices. What to do?

Don’t be discouraged. It is not as bad as it looks. Though it may, at first glance, look like you have to choose between five thousand protein bars, you probably really only have a handful of choices. The reason for the limited selection of protein bars is the fact that most of them are, well, no good.

Because protein bars are popular right now, many companies jump on the bandwagon and put out their own versions, but they often have lots of sugar and other junk ingredients you don’t want in your body.

Since you are looking for protein bars, you are probably looking for something that will help you during or after a workout. Good protein bars provide your body with enough protein to help build muscle and lose fat. Bad protein bars (and there are a lot of these) are glamorized candy bars that may talk a good game, but fail to deliver. When choosing protein bars, don’t just read the front label. Of course that will be full of convincing information urging you to buy now. Read the back label. Is one of the first ingredients “sugar”? If so, keep looking. You don’t just want something that merely tastes good. You Want something that will actually help your body.

Many companies follow the 40-30-30 rule, which means 40% of calories are carbs, 30% are protein and 30% are fats. The best protein bars break this rule a bit and dedicate a bit less to carbs and fats.

Why Are Protein Bars a Good Choice for Athletes?

A lot of companies are making protein bars right now. Have you noticed? Sure you have. You have seen them in the grocery store, taking up a whole aisle. Protein bars have gotten so popular because of the importance of this nutrient to the body, especially the bodies of athletes.

Why are protein bars so popular? The main ingredient in them is necessary in the body to build and repair body tissue. This is crucial for athletes because they cannot build sufficient muscle in their body if it is not able to build and repair tissue. Quality protein bars also help the body to regulate its many important processes, like balancing water, contracting and releasing muscles and distributing nutrients throughout the body. Protein bars also help build stamina and energy, a must for every athlete, regardless of their particular sport.

If you are looking for the best protein bars and really want to feel the difference in your workout, buy protein bars that are high on protein and relatively low on sugar. Look for protein bars that have at least twice as much protein as sugar.

The lower the sugar content, the better. Protein bars that get most of their calories from sugar will only make you tired and make it harder to build muscle. Remember, excess sugar turns to fat. That means these poor-quality protein bars will actually do the exact opposite of what you want it to do. Sugar may make it taste better, but you will regret it later when you see the effects it has on your body. If you cut back on sugar in general, you body will become more sensitive to the taste of sugar, which means you won’t need as much for something to taste sweet. This is great for overall health and body performance.
